Club Profile: Whickham Photographic Club

Founded in 1973, Whickham Photographic Club is a fast-growing community of enthusiasts; with a good mix of all ages. Our oldest active member is aged 90+, our youngest junior member is aged 9 and is already becoming a keen photographer. Club members have a wide range of interests and expertise covering all levels of ability from novices to a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

The club’s core activity is the Friday evening lectures, demonstrations and competitions, which include plenty of opportunities for members to showcase their own work. About a quarter of those meetings involve visits by well-known amateur and professional photographers from around the UK. We usually jointly host at least one speaker with the RPS each year. Some of our evenings are open to members of other clubs.

Throughout the year, club members compete with each other for certificates and trophies, take part in regional inter-club competitions and enter some international salons. A highlight is the annual public exhibition of members’ work; which consists of Prints and Digital Projection.

On practical nights members share their skills and learn from one another. The club owns lighting equipment and other photographic equipment, which members can use either at a practical evening or hire for a nominal fee.

In the summer months we organise photography trips to various locations in our region. Members also attend major events such as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The Outings Group meets monthly for day time photographic trips, for more information please click on the Outings Group page.

The club meets on Friday evenings at 7:30 in Whickham Community Centre and draws its membership from a wide area. It is always keen to attract new members with a keen interest in photography, irrespective of their experience. Why not come along and see for yourself what the club is all about.

Whickham is a camera club that is serious about photography but never takes itself too seriously.
